On the men’s side, the biggest upset of the day was registered when Denis Shapovalov of Canada, seeded 13, was knocked out by Marton Fucsovics. It was a strange game by the big hitting Canadian as he appeared emotionally upset and got into an argument with the chair umpire over racquet abuse. Having played so well during the ATP Cup, the Canadian contingent was hopeful of a good showing from Shapovalov, but he could not bring his A-game to a tricky first round match. Fucsovics took full advantage of the inconsistent shot making of the Canadian by closing out the match in the fourth set.
The other seeded player to fall on the opening day was Borna Coric. Big hitting American Sam Query made quick work of the Croatian, beating him in straight sets.
Roger Federer and Stefanos Tsitsipas breezed through their respective opening round matches with resounding victories, while defending champion Novak Djokovic dropped a set against Jan Lennard Struff, but was able to recover quickly closing out the match in 4 sets.
On the women’s side, World number 1 and local favourite Ash Barty, withered a shaky start to proceed in 3 sets, while Sloane Stephens became one of the first seeded players to be knocked out in the first round. Naomi Osaka started her title defence with an easy win over Marie Bouzkova. The marquee match of the day between American teenage sensation Cori Gauff and Venus Williams lived up to the expectation, especially during the tightly contested first set. The teenager was able to hold her nerve and registered another straight sets victory over the former champion. All other seeded players along with Serena Williams progressed safely to the next round.
