It was a busy second day at the Australian open with some of the matches from opening day postponed to day 2 due to rain.
The world number one Rafael Nadal was in action on the men’s side and he only dropped 5 games en route to the second round. Local favourite Nick Kyrgios also made a winning start to his campaign, albeit after two tight tiebreaker sets. Milos Raonic remains the only Canadian left in the draw, with Vasek Posposil and Felix Auger-Aliassime both knocked out in the first round. It was the most disappointing start to a grand slam tournament from the Canadian contingent in recent memory. With US Open champion Bianca Andresscu withdrawing from the open, Canadian supporters were hoping for a good showing from the men, but the youngsters could not really deliver. They will hope for Raonic to carry the flag high. Joe Wilfred Tsonga retired from his first round match due to a back injury. He became the fourth seeded player to be eliminated in the first round while Danil Medvedev overcame a tricky opponent in Frances Tiafoe.
On the women’s side, wild card Maria Sharapova lost to Donna Vecic on Rod Laver arena while Angelique Kerber, Belinda Bencic Sonoma Halep and Elina Svitolina got off to a perfect start. In the upset of the day, British hope Johanna Konta bowed out to Ons Jabeur of Tunisia.
