The tennis just keeps getting better at this year’s Australian Open.
On Day 6, Garbine Muguruza registered a huge win against Elina Svitolina in a completely one sided match that finished in just over an hour on Rod Laver arena. Second seed Pilskova was also eliminated, albeit in a much tougher match, where the Czech lost both the tiebreaks. Belinda Bencic was only able to win one game of the total 13 played against Anett Kontaveit. The match ended in 49 minutes Simona Halep and Angelique Kerber safely progressed to round 4.
On the men’s side, Rafael Nadal cruised past Carreno Busta in straight sets while Dominic Thiem overcame a late comeback from Taylor Fritz. Alexander Zverev showed his class against Fernando Verdasco. Crowd favourite Gael Monfils overcame a tricky opponent in Ernest Gulbis. Nick Kyrgios seemed to be cruising to victory against Karen Khachanov winning the first 2 sets. The Russian was in no mood to give up though. Both players put on a serving masterclass for last two sets. Neither of the players even faced a break point during the last set. For the 12th time in this year’s Australian open, the winner had to be decided in a super tiebreak and the Aussie showed nerves of steel with some breathtaking ground strokes. The result sets up a blockbuster fourth round match between Nick Kyrgios and number one seed Rafael Nadal. The Aussie fans will be hoping for an epic encounter.
